What is the significance of CoinFund's investment in Irys?
CoinFund announced a lead investment of $10 million in Irys's Series A funding. I think this is worth discussing further:
In the past, on-chain storage has always had an awkward dichotomy:
Data exists in Ethereum contracts, programmable but with outrageous costs, sometimes dozens or even hundreds of dollars/MB? Using Filecoin, Arweave, etc., is cheap, but it's just dead files, and on-chain programs can't utilize them at all.
So most projects ultimately compromised: core logic is placed on-chain, but the actual data still relies on centralized services like AWS. The result is that decentralized systems are held back by the most centralized part.
Irys aims to rewrite this pattern. They are not creating another decentralized S3, but a programmable data layer:
※ Data can be directly read and written by smart contracts
※ Storage costs are ten times cheaper than AWS
※ The data itself can carry logic, such as automatic profit sharing, verifiability for AI training, and rules for IP usage
This transforms storage into a data asset layer, used not only by developers but also by future large models and AI applications.
Founder Josh is also quite a character. Previously, he worked on Bundlr, increasing Arweave's transaction volume from 10,000/day to 15 million/day, accounting for 98% of the entire network's activity. He can be considered one of the behind-the-scenes drivers that propelled Arweave. Later, he found the old architecture insufficient and simply built Irys from scratch!
CoinFund's logic: In the AI era, the data needed is not just about being stored, but about being callable, carrying conditions, and being traceable. Without this layer, decentralized applications will always be unable to avoid centralized storage.
So they directly define Irys as the possibility of on-chain AWS. Today it offers cheap storage and basic functionalities, and later it will become a data flywheel: the more data that goes on-chain, the more applications stack up, and the ecosystem becomes stickier.
For me, this is not just a funding news, but a signal that on-chain data layers are moving towards the mainstream! Irys already has its protective moat, and it is worth looking forward to after its launch!
